@xnviewi've tried on ubuntu 23 and no problem. If you start it from terminal, do you see something when selecting the .exr?
Sorry to report that I'm still having this issue.
I can't open *.exr files with international characters.
And also I can't open *.jxr directly through Windows Explorer.exe, but can open them through XnView MP's internal Browser.
OS: Windows 11 23H2

About the overexposure, with Windows Photo I can clearly see the sun and a shining spot in the cloud, with XnView MP the sun is just all blurred and the spot is invisible.
